Mammoth Ivory chessmen

This set of chess-men and the chess-board are made in the so called Calvert style. This is the most elegant classical chess style from England. The style is known from the beginning of the19-th century. A 19-th century turned set, stained and natural, the king and queen with openwork crowns, the bishop with deep clefted mitre, rook as a in tower on pedestal, all with turned ring stems and feet.

John Calvert, whose firm was at 1819, Fleet Street from about 1790 to about 1840, was Master of the Worshipful Company of Turners in 1819.


King: 11.5 cm (4.5 inches), Pawn: 4.5 cm (1.8 inches) -  weighted and felt lined;
Board: 38 cm (15 inches).

 
Calvert - Board White chessmen: wild pear-tree, mammoth tusk, box-tree, amber;

Black chessmen: stained wild pear-tree, stained mammoth tusk, stained box-tree, amber.

 

 
Chessboard base: oak, stained oak;

Black squares: nut-tree, mahogany, fumed oak, stained mammoth tusk;

White squares: wild pear-tree, mammoth tusk, birch, oak, ash-tree
